In John 13:34 Jesus gives the disciples a “new command”, to “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” He gives this command in the midst of being betrayed by Judas and Peter. Jesus’ charge to love is largely impart to communicate to the world that those that love like him are his true disciples. Secondarily, Jesus knew that his disciples would need the unity and encouragement that accompanies loving like him. Following Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection the disciples would face persecution, dispersion, self doubt, and discouragement. Today we all have moments and maybe similar experiences as the disciples, loving and being loved like Jesus sustains and equips us with the foundation needed to manage the day.
